Restore “Palestine” in the British Museum
Upholding historical terminology, curatorial integrity, and accurate representation of the region’s past
The British Museum has removed the word Palestine from its displays. This erases a people, a history, and a name that has been used for centuries. We are calling on the Museum to restore the term Palestine in its exhibits and to uphold historical accuracy, integrity, and representation.
For generations, maps, manuscripts, and archaeological records have referred to the region as Palestine. Its removal is not neutral. It contributes to the erasure of a culture and a community whose history deserves to be acknowledged. It also reinforces a narrow, modern political framing that presents the region only through the lens of a two-state solution, rather than reflecting the long and well-documented historical usage of the name across various periods.
Museums have a responsibility to present history truthfully. Reinstating the word Palestine is a simple, factual correction that respects the people whose heritage is on display and aligns the Museum’s practice with established historical evidence.
We ask the British Museum to:
Restore the term Palestine in all relevant exhibits.
Acknowledge the long-standing historical use of the name across multiple periods.s
Commit to transparent, academically grounded labelling practices.
